December 2013 Meeting Overview

Last night's meeting was a real treat for a select few!  It was great to see Brad, Denny, Kathy, Dana, Alan, Pat, Sandy, Bob from USA Central Station, special guest Nate from Allegion and ....drum roll ... what a suprise to be joined by Gene from Lab, Major & Jet!

Which - the latter takes the prize for long-distance haul seeing as he's in from Chicago.  Wow!

The meeting was conducted at even more blinding speed than usual due to the lack of attendance - which, just to be straight - if you didn't make it (and, statistically speaking, you did not) - no one is going to judge you poorly.  It was just brutal out there.  The folks who did make it were most certainly intrepid, committed, and skilled at winter vehicle navigation, hear, hear! But we also maybe suffered a touch of poor risk assessment.

More after the break - including the education summary from Nate Spitz with ALLEGION (what?):

At any rate, with only a handful of regular members, we could not address the main December agenda item which is elections - so, good news for anyone who is kicking themselves for not volunteering for a board term!  You've got another chance!

The positions up for vote are: Hospitality Chair - Rosemarie, Education Chair - Dana, and Sargent at Arms - Denny.  In addition there is an open Member at Large position.  Correction added 1-9-14 - Oh my stars and garters - that isn't right!  It's the Chair, Vice Chair and 2 members-at-large postitions that are up, just like it says in my very own sidebar.  Sorry! Luckily we didn't have enough people to do anything official.

No one has been nominated to oppose any of the incumbents - nor for the open seat - and aside from a scrappy duo trying to oust the Education Chair (that duo consisting of the education chair himself and yours truly) all positions are uncontested.

Also, the January meeting will not be on the literal first Wednesday being as that is January 1 and a holiday. The meeting will be held on the first effective Wednesday, January 8.

Nate Spitz did a great summary presentation on Allegion - the door hardware company which was spun off from Ingersoll Rand on Monday.  All of the security brands you've come to know and love from industry behemoth IR are now condensed into a more compact, dynamic - but still market leading - new company with no serifs: Allegion.

He introduced the newest addition to the growing CO line, the CO220 - a standalone, pushbutton lock with key override with a Classroom Intruder function:  the unit can be put into lockdown mode from 25-75 feet away via a push-button fob.

Schlage has also come out with a modular electric strike to accomodate cylindrical or mortise locks (with or without deadbolt) with interchangeable faceplate, field adjustable voltage, no power filter required and a stay-cool-keeper at a great price point.

Allegion has online education modules available  that address specific product offerings as well as broader security topics: Allegion Online Courses.

Lastly, we really appreciate Nate coming out in such awful weather for such a small crowd - but seeing as it was such a small crowd and newer, nimbler Allegion is sure to be coming out with all kinds of updates in the first quarter of 2014, we've got him coming back again in March.

Thanks a bunch, Nate, and we look forward to seeing you in the spring*!

*Ha! That's a joke!  We should be so lucky to have anything like spring at the beginning of March. No joking about looking forward to the presentation though -Nate's education talks are always first rate:  lots of good information, easy to understand - highly recommended!
