April Meeting Summary

Spring is struggling to convince us of its honorable intentions here in Minnesota but locksmiths continue to emerge from hibernation in growing numbers in spite of being disappointed time and time again.  We had an attendance of more than 20 regular members at the April meeting - our first in the new location at Grumpy's in Roseville.

The new meeting site is very nice - the room is agreeable and quiet, we have what amounts to private restrooms and bar right down the hall, and there is an elevator so even though we are in the basement, it's not much of a liability.  Plus, the fish & chips is out of this world.

Dinner is a flat $15 for anything (Juicy Lucy, Veggie Burger, Fish & Chips... there was something else, but I've forgotten it) - but there was a coupon on in the Locksmith Guild newsletter this month, so keep your eye out, they may do it again.

We were very pleased to welcome Gene and Maita Simon for the education portion of the evening.  Gene is the Hardware Specialist and represents Major Manufacturing, LAB, and JET Hardware - on this particular evening he presented the latest and greatest from Major Manufacturing.

Full education recap below the page break.

Major manufactures top quality installation tools that bring a little extruded aluminum luxury to your daily grind and make every door prep faster, easier and more perfect.  They have designed their products with versatility in mind:  features like reversible plates, easy adjustments and self-centering clamps accomodate multiple manufacturers, backsets, door thicknesses and trim options in each drill guide and router template.

Thoughtful extras like non-slip rubber pads and breakaway plates minimize the chance of damage when installling everything from exit device trim to cabinet locks in wood, steel and aluminum.

One of Major's most clever and economical time savers is their line of Lock Installation Brackets - they are still just as big a bang for your buck, but now they are available in a handy, refillable kit as well as in polybagged pairs.

Gene also demostrated the Extend-A-Cylinder which Major introduced last year and which puts those long-lead time, high-cost, extra-length mortise cylinders in stock, on your shelf, in every finish and almost any keyway you have for a fraction of the cost of OEM.

And it wouldn't be a Major presentation without the Key Trap, which is available from single gang up to a bank of 4.  When everyone wants a key but no one actually "needs" it, when OFF and ON can't be left to chance, when Human Error simply can't be a factor:  Key Trap is your solution.

Thank you so much Gene and Maita for coming out to Minnesota to bring us these industry updates.

Our next meeting will be Wednesday, May 7.  Social hour and dinner in the meeting room, 5:30-7, education and meeting 7-9.  Grumpy's Roseville, off Snelling, just north of County Road C - we're downstairs on the right.
